The Port of Truro lies at the head of the Fal Estuary. Lighterage Quay, the main commercial quay, is 350 metres in length and has storage facilities and a weighbridge.
Cargoes handled to date include bulk commodities (coal, stone, cement, sand, ore concentrates, scrap metal, animal feed, grain and calcified seaweed.)
The Harbour Authority has committed itself to upgrading facilities to enable, safe and quick handling of goods which includes maintaining a dredging commitment and improved navigational lighting.
The largest vessels handled include vessels up to 85m and deadweights of 2000 tonnes. Due to the inland location the port is tidal and vessels a width of 4.1m draft can be handled on mean high water springs.
In addition to cargo handling the port offers deep water sheltered lay up berths for vessels up to 190m.
In the emerging marine renewables sector the quay is ideal for mobilising or de-mobilising offshore marine plant. Lay up ship moorings can be used to trial or maintain renewable energy devices.
