Home refurbishment projects come in all shapes and sizes; from brightening up a bathroom by changing a set of taps, to designing a whole new kitchen or even transforming a home with a modern, eye-catching outdoor space. And Truro's riverside business district is the place to visit for every redecorating essential.
Based in the heart of the city, Newham and The Port of Truro boasts a number of DIY and home businesses offering the public and trade customers everything from tiles to woodburners and plumbing supplies.
With the weather turning chilly, having a warm home to relax in is on the mind of many a visitor to Cornwall Woodburners. Autumn is a hugely busy time for the firm, which has seen its business grow from just two members of staff to 26 in the past five years.
Supplying and installing high quality woodburning, multi-fuel, gas and electric stoves as well as the latest Eco Design Ready models and Range Cookers, the Newham-based business began life in the garage of managing directors Kean and Samantha Roberts' home. But now with a large showroom highlighting the vast range of popular stoves on offer, the company provides advice and guidance to homeowners, businesses and even building developers. Cornwall Woodburners has also recently secured a contract to supply and install stoves in a large new residential development near Truro.
"We carry out the whole job, start to finish, from an initial consultation and home survey through to installation and supplying fuel for our customers’ new appliances," said Kean. "Our staff are fully trained and have a wealth of knowledge to offer visitors to our showroom and we pride ourselves on working to a very high standard. A fire is the focal point of any room so we want to support customers to make the right choice to help their home look its best.
"It is fantastic to see the company grow over the past five years and that is down to our dedicated staff and also the customers who support our desire to provide the highest quality products."
Boasting one of the largest showrooms in the region, Cornwall Bathroom Centre advises, supplies and installs bathrooms as well as a range of kitchens. Providing for every budget, from a £100 cloakroom suite to a £40,000 designer bathroom, the company is renowned for its quality, customer service and competitively priced products.
"Transforming a kitchen or bathroom can be a real investment in any home and we understand how important these rooms are so we support our customers through every step of their purchase," said Kerri Robson, design consultant at Cornwall Bathroom Centre.
"Our showroom is the biggest in Cornwall with a huge display of products; with friendly high-skilled staff to help bring your dreams to life – and not only that, our dedicated installation team will ensure we are there to help every step of the way, from your first visit to the fitting.
"You really do get a full service that you just don’t get if you buy online."
City Plumbing Supplies has been a familiar face at Newham for almost two decades and has recently expanded its services to showcase even more products, from bathroom suites to showers, boilers and towel rails. Offering a dedicated service to trade and the public, the company launched a two-floor showroom in 2015 and regularly change the bathroom designs on offer to reflect the styles of shoppers.
Andrew Parkin, branch manager at City Plumbing Supplies, said: "Homeowners are starting to realise that bathrooms are one of the most important rooms in the house to give that property a real boost to its value. More people are looking to revamp their bathrooms and are keen to find the most interesting and exciting designs out there. We can provide that perfect look."
Heading out of the house, there are other areas of a property that can be revamped, for safety and for style. Cornwall Garage Door Centre is a family business run by Bill and Julie Osborne, joined by their daughter Emily in 2016. They supply, install, automate and repair a huge range of garage doors.
Established in 1986, it was the first garage door company set up in Cornwall and has become renowned for offering advice and knowledge to the public as well as building developers and businesses including schools, offices and bars.
The team of installers works across the county with Cornwall Garage Door Centre keen to expand its workforce by currently advertising for a new garage door surveyor to join the business.
The company has gone from strength to strength with the team moving from its former Newham premises to an even larger spot in the business district five years ago, giving Cornwall Garage Door Centre the chance to expand its offices and showroom, offering customers even more value and choice.
"There are such a wide range of doors available; from steel to timber or fibre glass with most available in a range of contemporary colours," said Julie Osborne.
"Our relaunched website showcases what we have on offer but it is always best to come along to the showroom and see the different styles available, with full size working models of up and overs, sectionals and roller doors.
"We wouldn’t move from Newham, the company has been here for a long time and we are happy with the many benefits being based here can bring. We are close to the city centre so it is very easy for people to come and visit us to see our range and talk to our staff about any questions they may have.
"Newham BID has also benefited the whole area, bringing businesses together allowing us to work closer to benefit everyone."
